Work Smarter, Not Harder: Using a Tire Changer Correctly

Leave a message

A tire changer is a great machine that saves time and effort in any auto shop. But using it incorrectly can damage expensive alloy wheels and tires. Knowing the right technique protects your equipment and your customer's wheels.

First, preparation is key. Always deflate the tire completely by removing the valve core. Then, break the bead. This means breaking the seal between the tire and the wheel rim. Use the machine's bead breaker arm carefully. Position it as close to the rim as possible to avoid damaging the tire sidewall.

When demounting the tire, use the right tools. Apply a good amount of lubricant to both the tire bead and the rim edge. This reduces friction and prevents damage. Choose the correct mounting head for the wheel size. Position the tire in the machine so the bead is away from the mounting head. As the table rotates, the tire should come off smoothly. Using protective nylon or plastic tools, like our tire levers, helps to guide the bead over the rim without scratches.

Mounting a new tire requires the same care. Lubricate the new tire's beads and the rim thoroughly. Start the mounting process, making sure the bead sits correctly in the drop center of the rim. This gives you the most space to work. Use a slow rotation speed. Listen for a clear "pop" or two, which confirms the beads have seated correctly.

Finally, inflate the tire safely. Use a clip-on air chuck with an automatic inflation gauge. This is much safer than hand-holding the air hose. Always stand back and never lean over the tire during inflation. A safety cage is highly recommended.

Proper maintenance of your tire changer is also important. Clean it regularly and check for any worn parts. By following these steps and using quality equipment, you can work efficiently and avoid costly mistakes. Your customers will trust you with their expensive wheels.
