A Complete Guide to Transmission Fluid Replacement: Service Intervals and Oil Selection Standards for AT, CVT and DCT
Automatic transmission fluid maintenance directly determines the service life, shifting smoothness and driving stability of vehicle transmission systems. AT, CVT and DCT transmissions have completely different structural principles, working conditions and fluid performance requirements, so their replacement cycles and matching oil standards cannot be mixed at will, which is the core knowledge of daily automobile maintenance .
Traditional AT automatic transmissions adopt hydraulic torque converter structure. The standard replacement interval is 60,000 to 80,000 kilometers or 4 years. American models can be appropriately extended to 100,000 kilometers. Vehicles frequently driving in congested urban roads need to shorten the cycle appropriately. AT special fluid ATF needs to meet professional certification specifications such as DEXRON and Mercon. The fluid features moderate friction coefficient, excellent anti-foaming performance and stable high-temperature lubrication, which can ensure normal hydraulic control and gear shifting response. Mixed use of non-special oil will lead to delayed shifting, impact jitter and abnormal internal wear.
CVT continuously variable transmissions rely on steel belt and cone wheel friction to transmit power, with extremely precise internal matching. Its maintenance requirements are stricter than other transmissions, and the recommended replacement cycle is 40,000 to 60,000 kilometers. Japanese models with low-viscosity original oil need to be replaced at 40,000 kilometers. Dedicated CVTF must be used exclusively, which contains special steel belt anti-wear additives, with strictly controlled friction coefficient and strong heat dissipation ability. CVT is not suitable for circulating machine oil replacement, gravity oil change is the standard process, so as to avoid damaging the lubricating film of steel belt and causing slipping failure .
DCT dual-clutch transmissions are divided into wet and dry types with distinct maintenance rules. Wet DCT soaks the clutch in fluid, requiring simultaneous replacement of gear oil and hydraulic oil every 60,000 kilometers. Dry DCT only needs regular replacement of valve body oil at 40,000 kilometers. Wet DCT fluid has high extreme pressure and anti-wear performance, matching high-speed frequent clutch switching working conditions. Wrong oil selection will accelerate clutch aging, reduce shifting sensitivity and cause irreversible mechanical damage .
In actual maintenance, vehicle manual specifications are the top priority above all universal intervals. Long-term heavy load, high temperature and harsh road conditions will accelerate fluid oxidation and deterioration. Regular inspection of fluid color, viscosity and impurities can avoid sudden transmission faults. Standardized oil change process, matching original certified fluid and regular replacement of transmission filter can greatly reduce maintenance costs and extend the overall service life of the automobile transmission system .
