Every year when the seasons change, shops are piled high with tires replaced by customers. Many people think that tires can simply be tossed into a corner, but improper storage can damage even a good tire before its next use. Today, we'll discuss some easily overlooked storage details.
Step 1: Cleaning and Drying are Key. Before storing, thoroughly remove sand, oil, and brake dust from the tire tread using a professional cleaner and brush. Pay special attention to small stones stuck in the tread, as they may become slightly embedded in the rubber under long-term pressure. After cleaning, ensure the tires are completely air-dried; any moisture can cause rust on the rim (if stored with rims) or mold growth inside.
Step 2: The Golden Rule of Tire Pressure – Adjust to the Standard Value! A common misconception is that "long-term storage requires deflating the tires completely." On the contrary, we recommend adjusting the tire pressure to the standard value specified by the vehicle manufacturer (found on a label near the door). Proper pressure helps maintain the tire's original shape, preventing sidewall cracking or deformation caused by prolonged static pressure. Of course, over-pressure storage is absolutely prohibited.
Step 3: Choose the right posture and location. Ideally, place tires vertically on a dedicated tire rack and rotate them periodically (e.g., monthly) by a quarter turn to prevent fixed-point deformation. If stacking is necessary, strictly limit the stacking height (no more than four tires recommended) and place flat wooden boards or foam pads between layers to distribute pressure. Always avoid direct sunlight, humid environments, and proximity to heat sources (such as water heaters or motors) or ozone sources (such as electrical boxes), as these are the three major killers of rubber aging.
Step 4: "Clothe" the tires. If storage may exceed several months, it is recommended to wrap them in an opaque, breathable tire cover or a black plastic bag to isolate them from light and dust. Never use ordinary transparent plastic film to seal them, as this will prevent internal moisture from escaping and cause condensation.
Remember, professional storage services can themselves be a value-added service for your store. When you use this standard process to store tires for your customers, you are not only storing goods, but also their safety, trust, and future repeat business.
